Need an RFC (Mexican Tax Id)?

When receiving income in Mexico for a commercial activity such as rent from rental property (Airbnb) or online sales (Amazon, Mercado Libre, etc…), you are obliged to pay taxes in Mexico for such income.

As from 1 June 2020, the Mexican Government requires that all the digital platforms in Mexico, such as Amazon, Mercado Libre, Airbnb, etc, withhold a percentage of their users’ sales as a tax payment. Digital platforms are requesting all their users provide them their RFC, which is their Mexican taxpayer registry number.

You are required to pay these taxes as long as one or more of the following is true:

  • The business operation happens inside Mexico.

  • The payments are made through a digital platform located in Mexico.

  • They are requested from within Mexico.

  • A Mexican code phone number (+52) is used.

If you do not have an RFC, Mextax can offer you

a solution according to your profile.

FAQ

RFC (Registro Federal de Contribuyentes) is a Mexican tax ID issued by SAT (the Mexican tax authority). It is required for paying taxes, issuing invoices, opening bank accounts, and operating a business in Mexico.

Yes. Any individual or business earning income in Mexico — such as from property rentals, professional services, or online sales through platforms like Amazon or Airbnb — must have an RFC.

Yes. Foreigners with temporary or permanent residency in Mexico can obtain an RFC as an individual. If you don’t have residency, you may need to establish a Mexican company to get an RFC.

Since June 2020, platforms like Amazon, Mercado Libre, and Airbnb must withhold taxes from users’ income. To determine the correct withholding rates, they require sellers and hosts to provide their RFC.

If you don’t provide an RFC, digital platforms must withhold 16% IVA (VAT) and 20% ISR (income tax) from your sales or rental income. With an RFC, these rates are reduced significantly.

Mextax can help you apply for an RFC with SAT. If you have residency, we can register you as an individual. If not, we can assist you with setting up a Mexican company or provide tailored solutions.

With proper documentation, obtaining an RFC usually takes a few weeks. Mextax ensures the process is handled quickly and efficiently.
